VESTI x Rastrullo : of Origins and Function
The VESTI x RASTRULLO collaboration is a triumphant display of balance of which the traditional and the modern harmoniously combined to create pieces that surely not only celebrates the Filipino beautiful crafts but to serve functionality as well.
With an aim to be part of and elevate our daily routines, the VESTI x RASTRULLO multi-function trays are versatile keepers of our valuables whether it be our dinner sets, stationery, jewelry, or any other important things that matter. With the expert hands of the Ratsrullo artisans in metalwork juxtaposed with the vibrant storied T’nalak weave of the T’bolis, it will surely be a great Filipino accent in our homes.
Martha Rodriguez, CEO of VESTI, has this to say about the collaboration and Rastrullo’s creative principal Joseph Gonzales Rastrullo :
‘When we were planning for the Intrinsic collections, we specifically wanted to collaborate with a designer whose aesthetic is directly opposite of VESTI. We wanted more structured, a bit more rigid, masculine characteristics that will counter the feminine and jovial spirit of our brand, and it comes as no surprise that RASTRULLO fits the bill.
I have first known Joseph Rastrullo from Redbox talents and was really impressed with his works on metal - something so hard is made into organic, more romantic pieces. So we were really excited to have him on board with us for a beautiful partnership.
We thought of doing a useful and multi-function piece that combines both our brands’ design languages. We would also like to offer something more worthwhile during these times - so we came up with the tray organizer and features colored metal works - a deviation from Rastrullo’s usual palette - and T’nalak weave of T’bolis to represent our origins and our beautiful heritage.’
VESTI Conversations had a quick rundown with Joseph to discuss about the collaboration project.
What does collaboration with other creatives like VESTI mean to you?
Always felt that collaboration is needed as each designer is now able to learn from each other but also at the same time to be able to produce work beyond what is normally done.
As the world faces a string of health, economic, and political concerns - what role does creativity, and creatives, play in this global shift?
Locally, people are surprised that we are able to create things that will be able to support their businesses. I have engaged with multiple collaborations during this pandemic since certain restrictions choked their usual way of trading. Designers have always been responsible for directing lifestyle. With the right products being released, we can help adapt our ways of living as we battle this pandemic.
What is the inspiration behind the collaboration collection? How do you get inspired?
It was simply finding a balance between the VESTI patterns and the craft of my studio.
Walk us through the process of creating this collection. Was it easy? fulfilling?
The strength of our studio is working with metal. We used simple spot welding techniques to develop clean lines while trying to align with the VESTI aesthetics.
What do you see or expect for the future of the industry?
There will be more collaborations and probably an increased highlight on custom work.
