As a new addition to the family of VESTI bags awaits its launch, let us take you first on the story, inspiration, and journey of the Babydoll Mini Totes - an homage of evolution and growth to the classic VESTI Nena Tote and a heartwarming tribute to the lady that inspired this growth.
In 2012, VESTI launched the Nena Tote as part of its original line up of classic handbags that feature different weaves from different tribes of Mindanao island, south of the Philippines. The Nena tote is a quintessential tote bag that packs all the things one need for everyday use or a getaway weekender. Its roomy size is perfect for those multitaskers that need a large bag to carry all their things. People loved the big size of the Nena tote as well as the colorful combinations of the Yakan handwoven weave at its center.
By 2015 and early parts of 2016, VESTI did some improvements to the design of the Nena tote and made it more sophisticated, chic, but at the same time unapologetically badass. The new VESTI design language has been adapted to the then new version of the Nena tote. With a more structured silhouette, finer quality leather, and stud rivets to add pizazz to the design, different people from different parts of the world enjoyed its versatility and practicality. Men, women, Filipinos, and foreigners alike carried their own Nena tote bags and became part of their lifestyles whether for work or leisure.
As VESTI continues to grow its brand, so is its exposure to different markets. In 2017, the Nena tote bag was part of a VESTI campaign shot and produced in London, United Kingdom that features the classic design line up of the VESTI bags.
VESTI is also a reflection of its founder’s life journey and where she sits at her current life story. Martha Rodriguez, VESTI founder, has always put value to ‘family’. It has always been part of VESTI’s core to uphold the intimacy, integrity, and support that ‘family’ brings. We consider our patrons as friends or family, and our team has always been family-like, thus, when she personally expanded her own personal family through marriage, it has come at no surprise that the VESTI brand grew as well.
When Martha realized during the height of pandemic lockdowns that family is one of the the most important treasures one should value, inspiration came in to her and earnestly paid tribute to her newfound family, especially her mother-in-law, Mrs. Cheryl Anne ‘Babydoll’ Diago - who became the inspiration to the re-design of the Nena tote bag and named it after her.
‘Originally this style was first requested by my (now) mother-in-law in 2019, Babydoll Diago. Delightful, luminous and exudes a quiet confidence of a fear-fighter, she conquers it all like Joan of Arc. She is easily enjoyed and loved by everyone. Her heartstring conversations would start with so much memories of her husband, her secret recipes, her love for crafts, sisters and family. I am deeply grateful for her love.’
